The United Nations has partnered with the organizers of the first-ever Youth Olympic Games to raise awareness about HIV among young people, who account for 40% of all new infections, as well as fight stigma associated with the virus. The Games, which kicked off on 14 August in Singapore, will be held every two years – alternating between Summer and Winter – for young athletes from around the world between the ages of 14 and 18. "Young athletes are role models in their communities," said Michel SidibĂ©, Executive Director of the Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). "We need to call on these young people to lead the prevention revolution if we are to reach UNAIDS' vision of zero new infections." more on www.ippf.org |
