As a result of intense advocacy by IPPF, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations and UN agencies reproductive health is now included as a target within the MDG framework.
The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) evolved from the Millennium Summit in 2000.
Leaders and Heads of State of 189 countries met in New York in September 2000 at the United Nations Millennium Summit to discuss the major problems affecting the developing world.
From the Summit came the Millennium Declaration, and a year later a series of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was issued with the overarching aim of reducing poverty by half by 2015.
Targets and indicators
A list of the new targets and indicators
Each of the goals has associated targets and indicators. To achieve any of the MDGs, each of its respective targets has to be reached.
To know if a country is on course to reach a target, indicators have been developed. These indicators measure progress in reaching the target.
• Each target needs to be met to be able to achieve the goal
• An indicator is used to measure progress towards reaching the target
The MDGs are based on the outcomes of the international conferences of the 1990s, such as the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).
